The case study report “A Generation Denied: Case Studies on the Consequences of the Education Ban on School-Girls in Afghanistan” was published by the Women and Children Research and Advocacy Network (WCRAN) in 2025, on the fourth anniversary of the Taliban’s ban on girls secondary education in Afghanistan. Its main objective is to examine the human, social, and psychological impacts of the Taliban’s continued ban on girls’ education, which has made Afghanistan the only country in the world where secondary and higher education for girls is officially prohibited.
This study employs a qualitative case study methodology. WCRAN researchers conducted in-depth interviews with twelve school-aged girls across six provinces—Kabul, Balkh, Herat, Nangarhar, Badakhshan, and Wardak—to explore the real-life consequences of the ban on their personal and family lives. The report aims to document the psychological, social, and economic effects of this policy and to warn of the potential loss of an entire generation of Afghanistan girls deprived of their right to education.
