ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan regarding the submission of arrest warrant applications for two senior Taliban leaders on charges of crimes against humanity, specifically persecution on gender grounds.
The Women and Children Research and Advocacy Network (WCRAN) fully supports and commends the recent announcement by ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan regarding the submission of arrest warrant applications for two senior Taliban leaders on charges of crimes against humanity, specifically persecution on gender grounds.
This development represents the culmination of over three years of persistent advocacy by women and women’s organizations dedicated to holding the Taliban accountable for their systematic violations of human rights, particularly those targeting women. It not only reflects our collective demand for justice but also reaffirms the international community’s responsibility to challenge policies that perpetuate gender-based oppression.
The ongoing persecution of women in Afghanistan has been a focal point of our efforts, and we regard this initiative as a vital step towards justice. It highlights the gravity of the Taliban’s actions and reinforces the case for the recognition of gender apartheid as a crime under international law. Furthermore, this action sets an important precedent, paving the way for further accountability regarding other crimes against humanity committed in Afghanistan.
We remain hopeful that this milestone will translate into meaningful outcomes for Afghanistan women and girls who have endured immense suffering under an oppressive regime.
